Journey Triptych

Journey was conceived as a gallery installation by mixed media artist Piers Bishop. It consists of a website, a fantasy animation and a set of fine art prints. These are all based on a short walk to a Morecambe beach.

The Journey Triptych

“Journey” was originally conceived as a digital triptych, the three parts being a website, a fantasy animation and a set of prints. It was intended to immerse the gallery visitor in the visual experiences of local walk from my front door to the sea. The installation when set up in a gallery has a computer with access to the website placed close to a large projected animation. Alongside the computer is a book of prints.

There are a number of different routes that can be taken from my front door to the sea and the website allows the user to navigate along all the local options to arrive at the water line. I had local business interest in this project and considered developing outside my artistic career until I became aware that Google were developing “Street View”. The original site is preserved and can be explored here. Google’s development of “Street View” has in however changed the context in which I feel it can be seen, so I have no plans to ever show the completed triptych again.
Animation
Still from a fantasy animation. part of a gallery instalation by contemporary artist Piers Bishop
Often whilst on the beach I stare at the rocks taking in the complex patterns and textures. My mind wanders into the holes loosing my imagination on the world that might exist within those spaces. The fantasy animation is high definition and designed to be projected onto a very large screen or wall filling the viewer’s field of vision. It begins very slowly to entrance the viewer and draw them gently into another place. You can see a copy here but please note that the quality is much reduced for fast streaming on the internet. I feel this work is strong enough to stand alone so I may show it in the future.
Prints

Originally a book of fine art prints was placed near the computer. They are derived from photographs taken along the way and any user of the website can pass right by the places where they were snapped. I think these prints have enough integrity be considered as individual works and they will be issued as limited edition runs of 100 fine art prints for each image. They are available to view here.
